CORDIS Newsletter: Your window into advancements that shape the future

The CORDIS Newsletter brings you fresh ways to explore and engage with EU-funded research. In this edition, we focus on two recent CORDIS milestones: the launch of a user-driven classification system in EuroSciVoc, allowing users to shape how scientific content is organised, and the inclusion of Horizon Europe in the EURIO knowledge graph, enhancing the interconnected landscape of European research data.

We also introduce you to the CORDIS Thematic Packs section on our website. These curated collections of research projects and results, grouped by theme, offer an accessible and user-friendly way to discover scientific advancements that matter to you.

In other EU research news, we bring you information about the Horizon Magazine and the Science4EU campaign, an inspiring initiative that showcases how science can bring people together and drive societal progress.

As the newsletter pauses for the summer, we look forward to reconnecting with you in the autumn with more updates, stories and discoveries from the European research community.

Enjoy the read!

Enhancing EuroSciVoc with user-driven categorisation

EuroSciVoc, the European Science Vocabulary managed by the Publications Office of the EU, is improving its classification system with a new feature that allows registered users to suggest categories for CORDIS projects. This participatory approach enhances accuracy by refining the automatic categorisation process, which previously relied solely on algorithmic suggestions.

""

EuroSciVoc is a multilingual taxonomy that represents key fields of science discovered from CORDIS content using natural language processing (NLP) techniques. Available in six languages, EuroSciVoc provides an essential reference vocabulary for the Open Science community. Until now, its categorisation relied exclusively on automatic suggestions. With the new functionality, users can use EuroSciVoc taxonomy to propose more precise categories, which are then reviewed before implementation.

This feature not only improves classification accuracy but also strengthens EuroSciVoc’s learning capacity. By integrating expert feedback, the taxonomy becomes more dynamic and aligned with Linked Open Data standards, enhancing its value for the research community.

Horizon Europe joins the EURIO Knowledge Graph

We are excited to announce a major expansion of the EURIO (European Research Information Ontology) Knowledge Graph. Until now, EURIO has been a valuable resource, encompassing data from the 7th Framework Programme for Research (FP7) and Horizon 2020 (H2020), providing comprehensive insights into research projects, results, and related information. Now, EURIO is making a significant evolutionary leap forward by integrating Horizon Europe. This expansion significantly increases the volume of EURIO, enhancing its role as a valuable resource for the research community.

""

By adding Horizon Europe to EURIO, we are making the most recent EU-funded research accessible through the EURIO SPARQL endpoint, ensuring easy retrieval and analysis for a wide range of applications. Researchers and stakeholders can now explore new collaborations, track emerging trends, and leverage cutting-edge insights more effectively. This strengthens EURIO’s role as a key resource for the research community, fostering transparency, accessibility, and knowledge-sharing.

The elephant on the CORDIS website: what exactly are Thematic Packs?

As this Newsletter continues to spotlight CORDIS functionalities, it’s time to talk about the elephant in the room – or in this case, on the CORDIS website: Thematic Packs. They occupy a prominent spot on the homepage, and perhaps for that reason, it is tempting to assume users already know all about them. This is a chance to refresh your knowledge.

Thematic Packs are curated collections of projects centred around specific research themes. The section includes three types of packs, each offering a distinct perspective on EU-funded research. Projects Info Packs focus on early-stage initiatives united by a common topic. Results Packs, which make up the majority of packs, showcase tangible outcomes from completed or nearly completed projects. Synergy Packs highlight connections between Horizon Europe and other EU-funding programmes, demonstrating the added value of collaboration across funding streams. All packs are produced upon request from our colleagues within the Commission in order to show and explain the great achievements of EU-funded research.

CORDIS publishes around 30 Thematic Packs each year. Each pack is available for download as a PDF, and printed copies can be ordered via EU Publications. And if you’d like to stay informed, simply click the Subscribe button in any Results Pack to receive email alerts tailored to your interests.

CORDIS joining EU Science & Innovation Facebook page

We are excited to announce that CORDIS is joining forces with our colleagues on the EU Science & Innovation Facebook page. Starting in early June, CORDIS updates will be published there, allowing us to reach a broader audience interested in EU-funded research and innovation.

""

Please note that the CORDIS_EU page on Facebook will no longer be updated after 15 June. While the page will remain online for a while, no new content will be added. To stay informed about the latest research news and project results from CORDIS, make sure to follow us on the EU Science & Innovation Facebook page.

You can also continue to follow CORDIS on X for the latest news from the world of EU-funded research.
